    "Cheap" Head Units

Has anyone got experience with any of the cheaper head units out there?

I'm considering what options I have to pull out the standard stereo unit in the Jimny and replace it with something that suits my needs a little better... but I don't want to pay the earth for one of the big name brands (which we probably will do in the Patrol).

It appears there's a unit on E-bay that is designed to fit properly in the space the factory unit is in, and has all the features I need and more (bluetooth for music/calls, AUX/USB input for music, apparently plug-and-play wiring, radio, reversing camera - which granted isn't really necessary for the Jimny, but would still be nice to have).

I realise that screen quality, audio quality, etc. are likely to be substandard to a high-end brand name unit, but for my purposes in this vehicle I'm not convinced that justifies the extra price, particularly when I won't be playing movies on the screen and won't be upgrading the factory speakers anyway...

    Thoughts? Stories/experiences?

Why would I buy something for $10 when I can make it for $20

Beware of cheap Windows CE based head units like Aj said, they are horrid to use. It all comes down to what you want to do with it. I got a 7" double-din android based head unit for the prado but I only use it to listen to spotify as I have a Hema HN7 for my maps. In hindsight I would have been better off with a single din head unit and a pocket (something with bluetooth for my phone which can be had for the $150 mark). This is what I had in my old jimny and it worked a treat, you will need a fascia to correct the spacing around the head unit though.

I brought one of these, still haven't got around to installing it yet, looks like it will do everything i want it to do & the price was good, a mate of mine brought the same unit a few months before i brought mine & said his has been working great with no problems over the past 6 months, i mainly brought this one as it has a CD DVD player which a lot of head units don't seem to have these days.

Thats more-or-less what I have in the prado, but mine has 2gb of ram and a higher resolution screen, it was $400 though so you pay for the difference.

I've decided to go for an older style unit for the Jimny, still something double-din, and will have to get a fascia surround to make it fit seamlessly. There's some decent branded units out there with Siri Eyes Free which will do what I want, and some that allow bluetooth music streaming, which is the other important thing to me.

For the Patrol we tend to spend a bit more. I'm hanging out for a wireless Apple CarPlay unit for it... But they aren't going to be cheap!

Nice, we have a sony double-din unit in our other car (VW Polo) and it works great, has bluetooth so we can stream from our phones and make/receive calls and all the other good stuff.
