    Thanks Pacs

Not much to report progress wise, other than I am just about over removing paint Hopefully I will get to shoot some Primer on the weekend.

One small thing that did happen today, I got the latest batch of bits and pieces back from the Plating shop, I love a package of nice clean and shiny Zinc Plated parts

    Cheers Andrew
Why would I buy something for $10 when I can make it for $20

The preference for zinc plating, not anodizing AJ., was it because of past experience?

Anodising is only suitable for Non ferrous metals, so most commonly seen on Aluminium, I think maybe you are thinking of passivating, which is usually in gold but can also be done in Red, Green, Blue or Black and maybe some other colours. Passivating is done as an addition to Zinc plating and from what I understand offers no real protection benefit over just Zinc, its more for looks.

So here is the long winded version of why I only got these parts Zinc plated and not Gold passivated. Toyota bolts come in a spec known as JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and I have replaced a lot of bolts with new ones and I went to a fair bit of trouble to find JIS bolts, for the layman the main difference with JIS is the head size, so sourcing them meant I don't end up with odd ball head sizes (for a Toyota). Anyway I sourced a heap of low grade JIS bolts that where Gold passivated, I used lots of these on brackets that held on fuel lines and brake lines and other non critical points where high grade bolts were not needed. I also sourced some High Tensile JIS bolts and those ones came in Zinc. So I decided when I got the genuine bolts plated as pretty much all of them are of a higher grade (Toyota have a needlessly complicated system for bolt grades) that I would stick with Zinc, that way I know that pretty much all the bolts on the cruiser that are gold are generic low grade bolts and all the Zinc ones are Higher tensile.

Another reason with this particular batch was that lots of those bolts are for panels, door hinges, bonnet hinges, holding the mudgaurds etc on. I intend to paint all the panels individually and then reassemble, hence not painting the bolts. The Zinc will blend in nicely with the white paint where as Gold passivated would stand out like the dogs proverbials.

The parts that weren't bolts, I just went Zinc because I couldn't be bothered separating them into different groups to go to the platers

I haven't updated for a while, but that doesn't mean I have been slacking (well maybe a bit). There has been a bit more bodywork, dent knocking and the like, which is too hard to take pictures of, so I didn't, and then onto the more fun part, shooting some primer.

Everything has had a coat of Etch Primer.

And then everything has also had at least one coat of 2K Primer.

Lots of blocking going on now, which is just sanding the primer using a block backer to smooth out all the imperfections and get everything as flat and straight as possible.

When I say everything I mean everything except the bonnet, haven't started on that yet as I am still procrastinating about what I want to do with that. The bonnet will be pretty much the last thing to be refitted so no hurry there anyway.

It's going to be better than new when it's done AJ. If ever I need to buy another car I'm buying it from you. At least I'd know it was in perfect condition!
