In issue 175 of the 4WD Action mag there was a write up on the various 4WD recreation parks which are dotted around Australia, one of which was Bylong Creek 4X4 which is situated about 10 kms from Bylong and adjacent to the Wollemi National Park. I was curious to see what this relative new park was like so decided to do a quick overnight recce type trip last weekend to see what it had to offer.

The weather forecast for the weekend wasn't great, but that has never put me off going camping before, and so having spoken to the owner Bruce Kerney on the phone and confirmed our booking via e-mail, we got an early start and headed out. It was about a 1 1/2 hr trip to Bylong where we met Bruce, we're given a few freebys (I love stickers), and then were escorted into the property, with the trip from Bylong in taking about 1/2 to 3/4 hr.

There was a number of camping areas available, however we picked one of the larger areas which had a drop toilet for the girls, and was accessed via a small creek crossing. The site was well grassed and had rocky cliffs over looking it, quite spectacular, and you can't ask for anything better to go to sleep to than the sound of a babbling brook directly beside the camper.

After we had set up the camper and had a bite to eat, we set about exploring as many of the tracks as we could, and to the surprise of Bruce conquered most of the current tracks, including the wombat holes and the Coffin Track (competition pit area). With the park being relatively new more tracks are being established all the time, and with use the current ones will probably increase in their difficulty.

It wasn't difficult to find enough firewood in close proximity to the camping area, and so we built a modest fire to look at for the evening. During the night we were awoken a few times by the steady pitter patter of rain on the camper roof, and woke next morning to a bleak sky. When the camper dried enough between the scattered showers we decided to pack and head for home. This turned out to be a good decision as the rain got much heavier shortly after we packed, and we had a very wet trip home.

I have full intentions of returning to Bylong Creek 4x4, maybe not to tackle all the tracks again, but more for the nice camping spots and relaxing nature of the place.

It's very new, and not very well advertised at the moment. I had a pie at the Bylong shop on Saturday when we were meeting the Bylong Creek 4x4 property owner. Apparently one of the magazines is taking about a dozen camper trailers in there shortly, and I'm thinking it may be one of the Campertrailer of the Year type tests.

I've got a bit of video footage from the weekend, but just haven't got it edited yet. I'll post it up when it's done.

Gary do you have any more images from the weekend? I'd be interested in seeing the "Wombat Holes".

I'll see what I can find, and I'll also see if I can get that video edited and published, so that I can put it up as well.

Glenyse, this place would be a brilliant spot to hone 4wding skills. It has a bit of everything, and plenty of track for all skill levels.

I'm determined to get back there sometime soon, so I'll let you know if I'm heading out.

That would be great Gary. If it fits in with Scott's roster we'll definitely join you

Any updates with the video Gary, having heard your GU in the flesh before and in a few of your other video clips I'm hoping to hear that growl again!
