Well this was a one in a million chance to see event and ye we seen it. Watching this left us all speechless.

It was shaping up to be a magical day, calm, warm and flat oceans. This was going to be a great day’s fishing.
They only problem was that we were expecting to see many whales. This would cut into our fishing time because we love to stop and watch them. Little did were know what we were about to witness.

As we made our way out past the amazing wreck of the McDermott Derrick Barge .
In the year 1989, McDermott Derrick Barge No 20 was scuttled off Dampier, West side, NE tip of Eagle hawk Island .
There is one wreck known in the proposed reserve. During Cyclone Orson in 1989 the McCormack, a dredging barge, broke its moorings off West Lewis Island, in the nearby proposed Dampier Archipelago Marine Park, and was wrecked on Eagle hawk Island

Once past the island we seen a couple humpbacks just laying around. One really large one and a smaller one. We pulled up and turned off the engine. They both came pretty close and i started snapping images. Gee what a sight!!!!

Next we seen something we will never forget. We watched as the mother gives birth to the calf. As soon as the calf comes out the mother swims down then brings the calf to the surface. She almost pushed it right the way out!!! This is to make sure it gets all the oxygen it needs.

This is taken from a media article about the event…..

“Though they didn’t understand what they were watching at the time, the experts later realized from photographs that they had witnessed a “calf’s first breath of life,” which they described as a “holy grail” for whale science. “

Here is my first image…
