Now this one may not be as dramatic as the last few but for us here in Perth this could of been a bad situation.
Rottnest Island is just off the coast of Perth and one of the most famous getaways and tourist locations. Some really cool beaches and top snorkeling around the many reefs. One spot called "The Basin" Is the most famous. All summer you can find people exploring rock holes, kids catching star fish , shells etc which brings me to the main part..... A good 95% of people here if not more have no idea one of the most deadliest things on the planet lurks around right where we play. With enough venom to kill 26 adults and being 10,000 time more toxic than cyanide this was a big wake up call. Story goes.....

I spend everyweekend down the beach fishing, swimming, snorkling. Here in Australia we have many things we have to be really carefull of like big sharks, stone fish, deadly jellyfish and of coarse the deadly Blue ringed octopus.

I have allways wanted to see one and always kept an eye open not just for my safety but just to see one in the wild.
Well on boxing day at the beautiful Rottnest island which is located just 30min ferry ride from Fremantle i finally found one but came very close to being bitten.
My partner and i had just bought 2 swags for our budget camping get aways and for real remote loctions.
What better way to test them then Christmas night at Rottnest island.
We set the swags up …

We then took a walk around Pinkies bay and watched the sunset behind the lighthouse. What beauty!

The next morning at 7am we woke up and made our way to the would famous “Basin” See link below…

This is the beautiful site were were greeted to..(only ones there)

We were pretty much the first people there. Life guards were setting up there gazibo.
I couldnt help but get strait into the water

As i stood right in the middle of the sandy area i was looking in the water admiring the christal clear water and how nice it was just standing up to my hips in paradise.

I had my Go pro camera incase i found anything good to photograph or film

I then noticed what i thought was a squid swimming strait over to my legs. I thought ” How cute , it thinks im structure and wants to take cover seeing as though the middle of the basin is to open and exposed.

It got within a foot of my leg then i noticed something i will never forget. Little blue rings!!!!! My first though was WOW how cool!!!!! Next thought was GTFO!!!! Get away as soon as possible. Lisa was standing right next to me and i pointed it out and how close it came to me. So lucky it didnt grab my leg becuase it would of thinking i was a pylong or something.

Lisa then said ” film it” What a great idea, i turned on the go pro and started filming. As i followed the little Blue rined i noticed the blue righs light up very bright. It was now really annoyed and it was time now to get out and tell the life guards.

Some interesting facts about the Blue ring…
1. You dont feel the bite

2. Venom from just one Blue ringed Octopus is powerful enough to kill 26 adults

3. Venom is 10,000 times more poetent then Cyanide.

4. There is NO antidote, you go bling in the first 10 min then all your organs start to fail. You then need CRP for 2-3 hours till teh venom wears off.

I alerted the West Australian News and they were very interested in running an artical seeing as though this is a location that is very popular and lots of kids like to collect shells, starfish etc and no one wants to see a kid get hurt or go though that let alone an adult aswell.
Here is the story they published…

I came across one many years ago while snorkelling at the marine park at Bushrangers Bay on the South coast of NSW. Scott and I had been snorkelling there for years and used to peak in to crevices to see what we could find. One day I found a blue ring. I was very careful where I stuck my hands from there on in I can tell you! They're quite pretty - shame they are so deadly. I always remember being told at a first aid course that as long as CPR was kept up continuously you would survive because as Marc mentioned, the venom wears off.
