View Full Version : (NSW) Betka River Paddle

Not your usual trip report however I thought I would share our kayak paddle today with you all.

We are currently in Mallacoota cathing up with friends. We took the time today to paddle on the Betka River. This is a couple of kilometres south of Mallacoota.

We entered the water at Betka Beach which is where the river enters the sea. It is often sanded over but presently is open and the river is tidal and it was running in strongly. We turned left (right leads to New Zealand) and paddled up stream for 2 hours before we ran into a log jam and turned around. The paddle back was a little quicker as the tide had turned and was helping. We ran into a stiff sou'easter in the last 500 metres but we landed safely.

The river is completely undeveloped and is shallow so not suitable for motor boats. In our 3 1/2 hours on the water we saw only 2 other kayakers.

We saw a snake crossing the river, a pair of sea eagles and a pair of wedgetail eagles as well as the usual assortment of water birds.

Have attached a couple of photos for you;

We've been paddling for about 4 years now. We really enjoy these quiet river and creek paddles. Not into open water stuff.

A decent hull design makes all the difference. Definitely a case of try before you buy.

Beautiful area Glenn.

Nice report Glenn. I love Mallacoota. Me and my fam spent last Xmas there at my Aunties place up near the telstra tower. All of our days down there started and ended at Betka river - a very nice safe place fo the kiddies to swim.

Did you stay at the van park mate? I did a drive through there and it is bloody massive and in a near perfect location

Yeh we are in the Foreshore Caravan Park. It is getting more popular each year with many people like us coming around the same time each year. Xmas time would be horrendous though.

Yeah mate it was full - but there was still room up on the hill away from the water.
I can't wait to go back there
